My experience in Vedic Astrology

Though I understood the effect of planets on human being and I also learned to interpret horoscope way back in late seventies but I did not show much interest in practising astrology then because I understood that most of the astrologers in those days (& even today!) followed the traditional way of analysing where lot of superstitions were involved which I did not like due my firm belief in the fact that the ‘human beings are rational creatures’.

I always believed that planets were just agents of one Supreme Power (Mother Nature) indicating only the effects produced by such causes, without them themselves producing the effects ………….and Jupiter was neither Brahmin (higher caste) nor Saturn a Sudra (lower caste) as referred in many ancient classic works.

I often opposed to the common belief and general practise by many Vedic Astrologers that such and such a sacrifice or grains or pulses or things should be offered to such and such a planet to appease it or pacify it. Nowadays, many people are under the false impression that their bad Karma, due to their past birth wrong deeds, could be easily changed into good Karma simply by changing the alphabets in their name OR wearing certain gemstones OR changing the directions of their sitting position or their sleeping position OR performing certain Havan or Puja-archana at temples etc & etc………hence they approach astrologers or numerologists or gemmologists, tarot readers, babas or mantriks, tantriks saints, priests, vastu-man etc when they experience unbearable hardship in their life and they spend thousands of rupees to see better days.

The fundamental tenet is that while passing through lives, every individual acquire virtue for all virtuous and noble acts; similarly curse for sinful and wicked acts. They go on accumulating till the end of life; then the departed soul, automatically carries with it the accumulated burden of both virtue and curse which together constitute Prarabdha Karma. Accordingly, under the Law of Karma, an individual must experience enjoyment as reward for the righteous act and suffer severe punishment for the evil act committed in the past birth whether an individual wishes or not and there is no escape from paying the penalty.

Nevertheless, an individual can try to clean the ‘virus’ adhered on to his / her soul (in the form of curse for past birth wrong deeds) by practising meditation or introspecting or self-analyzing or one can minimize one’s sufferings with own will-power, with positive thinking, with one’s virtuous and noble-actions. A noble action means discharging routine work honestly and sincerely. None of an individual’s good deeds go waste and they definitely yield good results-- may be immediately or after some time or even after a long period, probably after completion of his / her ‘punishment’ life; it all depends upon the way one discharges one’s duties. However, it is not necessary for any person to follow illogical way or shortcut means to receive the blessings of God immediately in order to change his / her Karma; simple and sincere prayers have never gone unheard. At last we must thank God for creating us intelligent creatures.

I am definitely not against anyone performing any Shanti Puja or against anyone wearing gemstones but at the same time I have been arguing since quite some years that one cannot simply come out of one’s bad Karma unless and until one would have completed at least 60% of his / her punishment life for his / her past birth committed sins.

From an astrological point of view, the timing of the ‘punishments’ imposed on a person as a result of past birth Karma is no doubt determined by the planetary positions in a horoscope, however, undertaking certain remedial measures before the completion of at least sixty percent of ‘punishment’ life would never wash away the past birth Karma completely.

In my opinion, sensible prayers have always yielded required positive results and insensible prayer never reaches the court of God….. If a person pray God to bless his children with good memory power in order to score good marks in the examination, then the person’s prayer is really sensible. At the same time, if a person perform Havan or Puja to appease God to bless his favourite cricketing team to win the match against its opponent team, then, ultimately the person is appealing the God to desecrate the opposite team even if they had good players to play good cricket, which is not at all acceptable to God, because all the laws of God are permanent and know no exemption; hence injustice can never exist there. Here, a person can pray in this way for the success of his favourite team: “Oh God, please see my country’s players use their sense and ability while playing the game and win the match with their merit”…..but definitely not by applying shortcut method like performing special rites to appease God to be favouritism towards a particular team.

In the same way, many people including many educated people believe that choosing an auspicious date or auspicious time for giving birth would make the newborn babies to feel lucky or at least make them escape unlucky after their birth, hence they rush to astrologers to find out auspicious times. The belief that infants developing birth defects or becoming abnormal if born during inauspicious day is deeply rooted in our country; hence many expectant mothers in our country scheduled for delivery during inauspicious period always prefer caesarean delivery either earlier or later rather than taking “risk”.

But the truth is that however rearranging the date or time for delivery according to our convenient during inauspicious days would simply change the Rising Sign, Moon Sign and the planetary position in the Birth-Chart of the baby and confuse the astrologers in the later period but definitely not the child’s Karma!
